About an hour after Jack left the apartment, Tess’s phone rang. It was still on the couch where she left it after she e-mailed Lucas. Figuring it was Jack checking in on her, she almost didn’t answer it.

When she did pick it up, planning on pressing the F.U. button and sending the caller to voicemail, Tess’s heart just about leapt into her throat to see the area code that flashed on the screen.

Because there was no real need for Lucas to have his own phone, he purchased a cheap burner phone in the next town over for when he wanted to contact Tess. The minutes never lasted for long—and she was careful not to save any numbers in her cell just in case—but whenever she saw that area code, she knew who would be on the other line.

But how?

She only just sent him the e-mail giving him a heads up that, after all these months, she finally talked to Jack. Tess expected it to be a couple of days before she heard from him.

Before the phone stopped ringing, she quickly answered.

“Luc? That you?”

“It’s me, babe.”

Swallowing roughly, she asked, “Can you talk?”

“I didn’t mean for you to have to do that. What about your patients? Don’t they need you?”

“It’s fine. I shut up the office early. Unless it’s an emergency, they won’t need me. I’m more focused on you right now. Your e-mail… what happened, Tessa?”

He sounded so calm. So controlled. And she knew, from the last five years that they had known each other, that Lucas was never more dangerous than when he sounded like he couldn’t be bothered.

He might seem almost bored, like he was just asking about her day. She knew better. He wasn’t asking her anything.

He was demanding to hear the truth because, if he could, he would take care of any of her troubles for her.

It shouldn’t make her feel as protected, as safe, not when she knew the lengths he’d be willing to go to make her happy. But it did, and with the way he was just as devoted to her made the scene with Jack worth it.

And then she remembered that Jack absolutely refused to even hear her out about a possible divorce...

She’d told Lucas as much in the e-mail. He had been her inspiration, after all, his own divorce from Caitlin giving Tess the idea that a marriage could be ended if it was a mistake. Only problem was that Lucas eventually found a way to make his own stubborn ex agree. After dating Jack Sullivan
